Who is Chidambaram
Chidambaram, also known as Thillai, is a sacred city and temple complex in Tamil Nadu dedicated to Nataraja, the cosmic dancer form of Shiva. It is considered the heart of the universe and the foremost center of Shaiva worship. The temple's origins are rooted in Vedic and Puranic traditions. The Rigveda (1.32) alludes to the cosmic dance of Indra, which later traditions associate with Shiva's dance at Chidambaram.
The Skanda Purana (Maheshvara Khanda) describes the site as the place where Shiva performed the Ananda Tandava (blissful dance) before the sages of Thillai forest. The temple uniquely houses both the Akasa Linga, a formless representation of Shiva as the element of space (akasha), and the iconic Nataraja shrine. The Akasa Linga is one of the five elemental lingas (Pancha Bhuta Lingas), representing the quintessence of the cosmos. The Chidambara Rahasyam, a secret curtain behind the Nataraja image, symbolizes the formless divine consciousness beyond all forms.
The temple complex features five sabhas (halls): the Kanaka Sabha (golden hall), Natya Sabha (dance hall), Chit Sabha (consciousness hall), Sabha of the thousand pillars, and the Ananda Tandava Sabha. The golden roof of the Kanaka Sabha is said to have been covered by the saint Manikkavacakar, as recorded in the Tiruvachakam. The temple is central to the Shaiva Siddhanta tradition, and the Tirumurai hymns, especially those of Appar, Sambandar, and Sundarar, extol its glory. The festival of Arudra Darshan, celebrating the cosmic dance of Nataraja, is the most important annual event, drawing thousands of devotees.
Chidambaram is revered as the cosmic heart where the physical and metaphysical unite, embodying the synthesis of form and formlessness, dance and stillness.
