Who is Gajanan Maharaj
Gajanan Maharaj (c. 19th–20th century) is a revered saint from Shegaon, Maharashtra, regarded by devotees as an incarnation of Lord Ganesha or Lord Dattatreya. His name 'Gajanan' means 'elephant-faced,' directly linking him to Ganesha. While no ancient scriptures mention him, his life and teachings are recorded in hagiographies such as the 'Gajanan Maharaj Charitra' and 'Gajanan Maharaj Stotram.' According to tradition, he appeared in Shegaon as a young boy in the late 1800s, displaying extraordinary wisdom and miraculous powers. He lived a simple life, wearing a white robe, and emphasized devotion, compassion, and service.
His teachings, compiled in the 'Gajanan Maharaj Stotram,' echo the Advaita Vedanta of the Upanishads, urging seekers to realize the oneness of the self with Brahman. The Skanda Purana, though not directly about him, is often cited by devotees to establish the sanctity of Shegaon as a holy place. Similarly, the Bhagavata Purana's emphasis on bhakti and the grace of the guru aligns with Gajanan Maharaj's message. His iconography depicts him seated in a meditative posture, with a serene expression and a simple white robe, often holding a lotus or a book. The lotus symbolizes purity and spiritual awakening, while the book represents his teachings.
His temple in Shegaon, known as the Gajanan Maharaj Mandir, is a major pilgrimage site, attracting millions annually. The temple complex includes his samadhi (tomb) and a sacred well. Festivals such as Gajanan Maharaj Punyatithi (death anniversary) and annual fairs draw large crowds. Regional worship is especially strong in Maharashtra, but his following has spread across India. In Hindu cosmology, he is seen as a modern saint who embodies the timeless principles of dharma, bridging the gap between ancient scriptures and contemporary spiritual practice.
His life exemplifies the ideal of a jivanmukta (liberated being) who continues to guide devotees through faith and devotion.
