§ 01Origins & Significance

Who is Kubera Lakshmi

Kubera Lakshmi is a distinct form of the goddess Lakshmi, revered as the consort of Kubera, the treasurer of the gods and lord of wealth. While Lakshmi is primarily associated with Vishnu, this form emphasizes her role as the bestower of material riches and earthly treasures. The earliest references to Kubera appear in the Rigveda (1.42.3) as a lord of hidden treasures, and later Puranic texts elaborate on his marriage to Lakshmi in her aspect as the goddess of abundance. The Skanda Purana (Kashi Khanda, chapter 23) describes Kubera Lakshmi as the guardian of the nine treasures (nidhis) and the eight perfections (siddhis), symbolizing the prosperity of the earth.

Iconographically, she is depicted with four arms, holding a treasure pot (nidhi kumbha) and a lotus, often seated beside Kubera. Her golden complexion and generous expression signify her role as the granter of financial stability and material well-being. The Devi Mahatmya (5.23) includes her among the manifestations of the supreme goddess, highlighting her power to bestow wealth and remove poverty. In regional worship, Kubera Lakshmi is particularly venerated during Dhanteras, the first day of Diwali, when devotees purchase gold and utensils to invoke her blessings for prosperity.

She is also worshipped in South Indian households during the annual Lakshmi Puja, where her image is placed alongside Kubera's. In Hindu cosmology, Kubera Lakshmi represents the material aspect of Lakshmi's grace, balancing the spiritual wealth associated with Vishnu. Her worship is considered essential for householders seeking financial security and success in worldly endeavors. The mantra 'Om Kubera Lakṣmyai Namaḥ' is chanted to invoke her presence.

While she is pan-Indian, her worship is especially prominent in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu, where she is invoked in business establishments and homes for wealth accumulation. The Bhagavata Purana (10.47.15) also alludes to her as the goddess who presides over the treasures of the earth, reinforcing her role as the divine source of material abundance.
