Who is Navagraha (Collective)
The Navagraha, or nine planetary deities, are a central feature of Hindu astrology (Jyotisha) and are worshipped collectively to invoke their benevolent influences and mitigate malefic effects. Their origins are rooted in Vedic and Puranic texts. The Rigveda (e.g., 1.105.1, 10.85) hymns Surya (Sun) and Chandra (Moon) as deities, while later texts like the Yajurveda and Atharvaveda mention the five visible planets (Mangala, Budha, Brihaspati, Shukra, Shani). The Puranas, especially the Skanda Purana and the Graha Shanti sections of the Bhavishya Purana, systematize the nine as a group, including the shadow planets Rahu and Ketu, which are the ascending and descending lunar nodes.
Iconographically, the Navagraha are often depicted together in a square or rectangular panel, each with distinct attributes: Surya in a chariot drawn by seven horses, Chandra on a lotus or chariot, Mangala on a ram, Budha on a lion or eagle, Brihaspati on a chariot or elephant, Shukra on a horse or camel, Shani on a crow or vulture, Rahu as a serpent head, and Ketu as a serpent tail. Each deity has a specific color, gemstone, and direction. Principal myths include the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthana) from which Rahu and Ketu emerged, as described in the Mahabharata (Adi Parva) and the Bhagavata Purana (8.6-8). Another episode from the Shiva Purana recounts how Shani, the son of Surya and Chhaya, was cursed by his father, leading to his slow movement.
The Navagraha are considered karmic agents who dispense the fruits of one's deeds. Regional worship varies: in Tamil Nadu, the Navagraha temples in Kumbakonam are famous; in Odisha, the Konark Sun Temple features the nine planets; and in Maharashtra, the Navagraha Shanti rituals are performed during eclipses. Their role in Hindu cosmology is to govern time, destiny, and the cycles of rebirth, as outlined in the Jyotisha Shastra. Collective worship, such as the Navagraha Puja and recitation of the Navagraha Stotram, is believed to pacify planetary doshas and bring prosperity.
