Who is Senthil Andavar
Senthil Andavar is the form of Lord Murugan (Skanda) enshrined at the Tiruchendur temple, one of the six sacred abodes (Arupadaiveedu) of Murugan. The name derives from 'Senthil' (the ancient name of Tiruchendur) and 'Andavar' (Lord). This aspect represents Murugan as the victorious warrior who vanquished the demon Surapadman. The primary scriptural source for this narrative is the Kanda Purāṇam, the Tamil rendition of the Skanda Purana, which details the cosmic battle between Murugan and the asura forces. According to the Kanda Purāṇam, Surapadman had terrorized the devas, and Murugan, at the behest of Shiva, led the divine army.
The climactic battle occurred at Tiruchendur, where Murugan split Surapadman into two halves, which became the peacock (his mount) and the rooster (his emblem). This event is celebrated annually as Soora Samharam during Skanda Shashthi. Iconographically, Senthil Andavar is depicted with a fierce expression, holding the Vel (divine spear) raised to strike, seated or standing on a peacock. The Vel symbolizes wisdom and the power to destroy evil. The temple is situated on the shores of the Bay of Bengal, emphasizing Murugan's association with the ocean.
The Skanda Purana (Sanskrit original) also describes Murugan's six abodes and his role as the commander of the deva army. In Tamil tradition, Senthil Andavar is revered as the youthful, ever-victorious lord who grants courage and protection. Regional worship includes elaborate rituals during Skanda Shashthi, where devotees observe fasting and participate in processions. The Tiruchendur temple is unique among the Arupadaiveedu for its seaside location, symbolizing Murugan's dominion over both land and sea. In Hindu cosmology, Senthil Andavar embodies the principle of dharma overcoming adharma, and his worship is believed to remove obstacles and bestow victory in endeavors.
