Who is Srinivasa Perumal
Srinivasa Perumal is the Tamil form of Venkateshwara (Balaji), the presiding deity of the sacred hill temple at Tirumala-Tirupati. He is revered as a compassionate, wealth-bestowing manifestation of Vishnu. The name 'Srinivasa' means 'abode of Sri (Lakshmi)', signifying his inseparable association with the goddess of prosperity. According to the Venkateshwara Mahatmya, a section of the Skanda Purana, Lord Vishnu descended as Srinivasa to answer the prayers of the sage Bhrigu and to grant liberation to the devotees. The myth recounts that Srinivasa married Padmavati, an incarnation of Lakshmi, and resides on the seven hills (Seshachala) as the eternal protector.
The iconography depicts him as four-armed, holding the shankha (conch), chakra (discus), gada (mace), and lotus, adorned with a crown and a radiant expression. This form symbolizes his role as the sustainer and bestower of boons. In the Bhagavata Purana, Vishnu's descent as Srinivasa is alluded to in the context of his avatars for the welfare of the world. Regional worship is especially prominent in Tamil Nadu, where temples such as the Parthasarathy Temple in Chennai and the Srinivasa Perumal Temple in Tirupati host grand festivals. The Brahmotsavam, celebrated annually, involves processions and rituals described in the Vaikhanasa Agamas.
Vaikuntha Ekadashi marks the opening of the inner sanctum's 'Vaikuntha Dwaram', believed to grant moksha. Devotees offer tonsure and donations as fulfillment of vows. In Hindu cosmology, Srinivasa Perumal represents the aspect of Vishnu who listens to the prayers of the Kali Yuga, granting material and spiritual prosperity. The Venkateshwara Stotram, a hymn of praise, extols his grace. Tradition holds that his idol is self-manifested (svayambhu) and that the temple's wealth is used for charitable purposes.
Thus, Srinivasa Perumal embodies divine compassion and the fulfillment of desires, making him one of the most widely worshipped deities in South India.
