Who is Ucchishta Ganapati
Ucchishta Ganapati is the eighth of the thirty-two Ganapati forms enumerated in the Mudgala Purāṇa, a major Purāṇa dedicated to Ganesha. This form is deeply rooted in Tantric traditions, particularly the left-hand path (vāmācāra), where the term 'ucchishta' refers to leftover food or remnants, symbolizing the transcendence of conventional purity and impurity. The Mudgala Purāṇa describes Ucchishta Ganapati as a deity who embodies the unity of opposites, accepting all aspects of existence without discrimination.
In the Tantric text Ucchiṣṭa Gaṇapati Tantra, he is venerated as a powerful deity who grants siddhis (supernatural powers) to those who worship him with offerings of leftover food, thereby breaking societal taboos. Iconographically, Ucchishta Ganapati is depicted with a blue or dark complexion, six arms, and seated with his consort Shakti on his lap. He holds a japa mala (rosary), pomegranate, blue lotus, elephant goad, noose, and lotus, while his consort holds a lotus.
The pomegranate symbolizes fertility and abundance, the blue lotus represents spiritual purity amidst impurity, and the noose and goad signify control over obstacles. This form is particularly worshiped in Kaula and other Tantric traditions across India, with special rituals performed during Vinayaka Chaturthi that involve Tantric practices. In Hindu cosmology, Ucchishta Ganapati represents the ultimate reality that transcends dualities, reminding devotees that the divine is present in all states, even the impure.
The Devi Mahatmya (5.23) similarly emphasizes the power of the goddess in transcending purity, and Ucchishta Ganapati parallels this concept within the Ganesha tradition. His worship is considered a path to liberation for those who can see beyond conventional norms.
