Who is Varadharaja Perumal
Varadharaja Perumal, meaning 'the King who bestows boons,' is the presiding deity of the Varadharaja Perumal Temple in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, one of the 108 Divya Desams revered in the Sri Vaishnava tradition. The deity is considered a form of Vishnu and is central to the Vaishnava canon, with the Divya Prabandham of the Alvars containing numerous hymns in his praise. According to the Brahmanda Purana and the Skanda Purana, the temple's hill, Athigiri, was brought by Garuda from the Himalayas, and Vishnu resides there to grant wishes. Iconographically, Varadharaja Perumal is depicted with four arms holding the shankha (conch), chakra (discus), gada (mace), and lotus, often in a standing posture (sthanaka) with a serene expression, sometimes accompanied by his consort Lakshmi (Perundevi).
The temple also houses a reclining form (sayana) and a seated form (veera-asana), symbolizing his roles as protector, preserver, and boon-giver. A principal myth, recounted in the Varaha Purana, describes how Vishnu assumed the form of a boar (Varaha) to rescue the earth, and later manifested as Varadharaja to fulfill the prayers of the sage Bhrigu and the celestial king Indra. Another episode from the Vaishnava Agamas tells of the deity granting a golden lotus to a devotee, exemplifying his compassionate nature. Regional worship is especially prominent in Kanchipuram, where the temple is a major pilgrimage site.
The Athigiri festival, during which the utsava-murti is taken in procession around the hill, attracts thousands. Varadharaja Perumal is also worshipped in other parts of Tamil Nadu and South India, often as a bestower of material and spiritual boons. In Hindu cosmology, he represents Vishnu's aspect as the sustainer who responds to devotees' needs, embodying the concept of prasada (divine grace). The temple's rituals follow the Pancharatra Agama, and the deity is invoked through mantras such as 'Om Varadaraja Perumal Namah' and the Varadaraja Stotram.
