Arundhati Vasishtha Dhyana Mantra

अरुन्धती वसिष्ठ ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Arundhati, Vasishtha, Ideal Couple
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Arundhati Vasishtha Dhyana Mantra is a meditative invocation dedicated to the legendary couple Arundhati and Sage Vasishtha, revered in Hindu tradition as the epitome of marital harmony and spiritual partnership. The textual origin of this mantra is found in the Puranas, particularly the Skanda Purana and the Padma Purana, which narrate the story of Arundhati, the daughter of Prajapati Kardama, and her marriage to Vasishtha, one of the seven great sages (Saptarishi). The Ramayana (Yuddha Kanda) also mentions Arundhati as a symbol of chastity and devotion. The mantra is a dhyana (meditation) formula, typically composed in Sanskrit, focusing the mind on the divine qualities of the couple.

While the exact beej-akshara (seed syllable) is not specified in this mantra, the names themselves carry vibrational significance: 'Arundhati' is associated with the star Alcor in the Ursa Major constellation, and 'Vasishtha' denotes one who is the best or most excellent. The mantra is chanted to contemplate their unwavering mutual devotion, which is said to protect marriages from discord. According to the Mantra Mahodadhi, meditating on ideal couples purifies the mind and strengthens the bond between spouses. The traditional purpose includes seeking blessings for marital fidelity, harmony, and progeny.

It is recommended to chant this mantra during auspicious occasions like weddings, especially during the Saptapadi (seven steps) ritual, and on Vat Savitri Vrat, a festival observed by married women for the well-being of their husbands. The ideal chanting count is 108 times, preferably in the morning after bathing, facing east. Ritual setting may include a picture or yantra of Arundhati and Vasishtha, with offerings of flowers and incense. Cautions: This mantra should be chanted with reverence and a pure heart; it is not recommended for those seeking selfish or harmful ends, as it is a sattvic (pure) practice aimed at spiritual upliftment.

The Devi Mahatmya emphasizes that dhyana mantras require concentration and faith; hence, distractions should be minimized.
