Griha Pravesha Mantra

गृह प्रवेश मन्त्र
Also known as: Home Entry Mantra, New Home, Griha Pravesha
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Griha Pravesha Mantra is chanted during the home-entry ceremony following a wedding, marking the bride's first formal entry into her new home. The ritual is rooted in the Grihya Sutras (e.g., Paraskara Grihya Sutra 1.9, Gobhila Grihya Sutra 2.7), which prescribe specific rites for establishing a household. The ceremony invokes deities Lakshmi and Ganesha—Lakshmi for prosperity and Ganesha for removal of obstacles.

The mantra often includes the beej-akshara 'Om' and phrases like 'Om Lakshmi Praveshayai Namah' (salutations to Lakshmi entering) and 'Om Griha Shantaye Namah' (peace to the home). According to Vastu Shastra (e.g., Vastu Vidya), the threshold is a sacred boundary; the bride steps over it with her right foot, often touching rice or vermilion, symbolizing abundance and auspiciousness. The mantras are intended to bless the new family with harmony, fertility, and prosperity.

Traditionally, the chanting is done by a priest or elder, with the bride and groom repeating the verses. The recommended count is 108 repetitions of each mantra, ideally performed during an auspicious muhurta (time) in the morning or evening. Cautions include ensuring the home is purified beforehand and that all participants are in a clean state.

The cow is also associated, as cow-dung is used for purification. The ceremony is pan-Indian, with regional variations in the specific mantras used, but the core purpose remains consistent: to invoke divine blessings for a happy and prosperous married life.
