Hora Mantra

होरा मन्त्र
Also known as: Astrological Hour, Planetary Hour, Hora Shastra

Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Hora Mantra refers to a set of mantras associated with the planetary hours (horas) in Vedic astrology. The term 'hora' derives from the Sanskrit root 'hṛ' meaning 'to take away' or 'to move', and in Jyotisha it denotes an hour of approximately 60 minutes, each ruled by a specific planet in a repeating sequence. The foundational text for this system is the 'Hora Shastra' (also known as 'Hora Sara' or 'Brihat Hora Shastra'), which details the calculation and significance of planetary hours. According to the 'Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra' (Chapter 2, verses 4-6), the hora of each day is named after the ruling planet of that day's sunrise, and subsequent horas follow the planetary order of the week.

The mantras themselves are typically short beej mantras or simple invocations such as 'Om Surya Hora' for the Sun's hour, 'Om Chandra Hora' for the Moon's hour, and similar formulations for the other planets (Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn). Each mantra is believed to align the chanter's energy with the specific planetary vibration of that hour, thereby enhancing the success of activities undertaken during that time. The 'Mantra Mahodadhi' (Chapter 5) mentions that chanting the appropriate Hora Mantra at the beginning of a planetary hour can remove obstacles and bring about desired results in endeavors such as business negotiations, travel, or study. The phonetics of these mantras are straightforward: 'Om' is the universal primordial sound, followed by the planet's name in the nominative case (e.g., 'Surya') and the word 'Hora' (hour).

This structure is designed to invoke the planetary deity's presence within the temporal frame. Traditional purpose includes career success, astrological alignment, and maximizing favorable cosmic timing. Recommended chanting context: at the start of the desired planetary hour, facing the direction associated with that planet (east for Sun, north for Mercury, etc.), with a count of 108 repetitions using a rudraksha or sphatik mala. Cautions: these mantras should not be chanted during the hora of a malefic planet for a particular individual without consulting a qualified astrologer, as per 'Jataka Tattva' (Chapter 3).

The Hora Mantra is a practical tool for harmonizing one's actions with the celestial rhythms, deeply rooted in the Jyotisha tradition.
