Narasimha Mantra

नरसिंह मन्त्र
Also known as: Narasimha Kavacham, Ugra Narasimha Mantra, Lakshmi Narasimha Mantra
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Narasimha Mantra is a powerful invocation of Lord Narasimha, the lion-man incarnation of Vishnu, who emerged from a pillar to slay the demon Hiranyakashipu and protect his devotee Prahlada. This mantra is primarily associated with the fierce (Ugra) form of Narasimha, as described in the Bhagavata Purana (Canto 7) and the Narasimha Purana. The central beej-akshara (seed syllable) in many Narasimha mantras is 'Kshraum' (क्ष्रौं), which combines the energies of fire (kha), water (ra), and the ultimate (au) with the nasalized ending (m). According to the Ahirbudhnya Samhita, this bija represents the destructive and protective aspects of the deity.

The mantra is chanted for ultimate protection, destruction of enemies, removal of fear, and relief from all forms of danger, including physical, mental, and spiritual threats. The Narasimha Upanishad, a minor Upanishad dedicated to this form, extols the mantra as a shield against evil forces and negative influences. Traditional purposes include overcoming obstacles, curing diseases, and gaining courage and victory in legal or personal battles. The recommended chanting context is during sunrise or sunset, facing east or north, after a bath and wearing clean clothes.

A japa count of 108 times using a rudraksha mala is standard, though for urgent protection, 1008 repetitions may be performed. The mantra is often recited during the festival of Narasimha Jayanti and Holika Dahan. Cautions: Due to its intense energy, the Ugra Narasimha mantra should be chanted with proper guidance and pure intent, as it can amplify the practitioner's inner qualities. It is advised to begin with the peaceful (Shanta) forms before progressing to the fierce aspects.

The mantra is not recommended for those seeking material gains without spiritual discipline, as it demands sincerity and devotion.
