Vivaha Homa Samskara Dhyana Mantra

विवाह होम संस्कार ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Vivaha Homa, Wedding Fire, Sacrificial Rite
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Vivaha Homa Samskara Dhyana Mantra is a contemplative verse chanted during the Hindu wedding fire ceremony, invoking the presence of Agni as the divine witness and sanctifier of the marriage. The mantra finds its textual origin in the Grihya Sutras, particularly the Ashvalayana and Paraskara Grihya Sutras, which prescribe the rituals for the vivaha homa. The Yajurveda (e.g., Taittiriya Samhita 4.2.1) also contains hymns to Agni used in marriage rites. The deity associated is Agni, the fire god, who serves as the primary witness (sakshi) to the wedding vows and the conduit for offerings to the gods.

The mantra typically includes beej-aksharas such as 'Om' and 'Swaha', with 'Swaha' being the essential exclamation for offerings into the fire, derived from the root 'sva' meaning 'self' or 'own', indicating the offering is given to the deity. The phoneme 'Agnaye' (dative of Agni) is central, invoking Agni's presence. The traditional purpose is to sanctify the marriage union, seek Agni's blessings for a harmonious and prosperous married life, and to purify the couple and the ritual space. The mantra is chanted during the homa, where the couple offers ghee, grains, and other substances into the fire while reciting the dhyana mantra to meditate on Agni's form and qualities.

Recommended chanting context: during the vivaha homa, ideally at an auspicious time (muhurta) determined by a priest, with a minimum of 108 repetitions (one mala) of the core mantra 'Om Agnaye Swaha' or 'Om Prajapataye Swaha'. The ritual setting includes a fire altar (kunda) with offerings of samidh (sacred wood), ghee, and purnahuti (final offering). Cautions: the mantra should be chanted with proper pronunciation and intention, as errors in the homa are believed to affect the marriage's auspiciousness. According to the Grihya Sutras, the priest must guide the couple, and the mantra is not to be chanted casually outside the ritual context.

The dhyana aspect involves visualizing Agni as a radiant, purifying force, witness to the seven steps (saptapadi) that seal the marriage.
