கொங்கு மண்டலத்தை ஆட்சி செய்த சேர மன்னர்களுக்கும், பாண்டிய தேசத்தை ஆட்சி செய்த பாண்டிய மன்னர்களுக்கும் அடிக்கடி போர் நடந்து கொண்டே இருந்தது. இதனால் இரண்டு தேசத்திலும் அதிகளவில் உயிர் சேதமும், பொருள் சேதமும் ஏற்பட்டது. பாதிக்கப்பட்டவர்கள் அனைவரும் அன்னை பார்வதியை வேண்டினர். இவர்களது வேண்டுதலை ஏற்ற பார்வதி செல்லாண்டியம்மனாக அவதரித்து இரு தேசத்திற்கும் இடையே போர் வராமல் தடுத்து நட்புறவை உண்டாக்கினாள் என தல வரலாறு கூறுகிறது.
நவராத்திரியின் 10ம் நாள் வாழை மரத்தில் வன்னிமர இலையை வைத்து, அதன்மீது அம்பு போடும் நிகழ்ச்சி மிகவும் சிறப்பு.
