சிதம்பரத்தில் சிவன், அம்பிகை இருவருக்கும் நடனப்போட்டி நடந்தது. அம்பிகை தன் ஒவ்வொரு அம்சத்தையும் ஒவ்வொரு வடிவமாக்கி, சிவனுக்கு ஈடு கொடுத்து நடனமாடினாள். அப்போது, அம்பிகை கிளி வடிவம் எடுத்தாள். சிவன், நாட்டியமாடியபடியே கிளியை கையால் தட்டினார். வலியைத் தாங்காத கிளி, சிதம்பரத்தின் எல்லையில் இங்கு வனத்தில் விழுந்தது. இவளே இங்கு தங்கினாள். கிளி வடிவில் தங்கியதால் இவளுக்கு "கிளியாளம்மன்' என்ற பெயர் ஏற்பட்டது.
யோக பட்டை அணிந்து கைகளில் அட்சமாலை, சூலத்துடன் தெட்சிணாமூர்த்தியின் வித்தியாசமான வடிவம் இங்கு உள்ளது.
