Who is Dakshineswar Kali
Dakshineswar Kali, also known as Bhavatarini ('She who liberates from the ocean of existence'), is the presiding deity of the Dakshineswar Kali Temple in West Bengal. This form of Kali is intimately associated with Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, who served as her priest and regarded her as the Divine Mother. While Kali is often depicted as a fearsome goddess, Dakshineswar Kali represents her compassionate, liberating aspect. The iconography shows her with a dark complexion, standing on a prostrate Shiva, with four arms holding a sword, a trishula, a severed head, and a boon-giving gesture.
Her tongue is silver and protruding, symbolizing her role as the remover of obstacles and the bestower of grace. The temple was built in 1855 by Rani Rashmoni, a devout philanthropist, and the deity was installed according to the Tantric tradition. The Kalika Purana, a major Shakta scripture, describes Kali as the supreme goddess who transcends time and death, and Dakshineswar Kali embodies this transcendental nature. The Ramakrishna Kathamrita, the gospel of Sri Ramakrishna's teachings, records numerous instances of his intimate communion with the goddess, where he experienced her as a living presence.
In Hindu cosmology, Kali represents the dynamic, creative energy of the universe, and Dakshineswar Kali specifically symbolizes the motherly aspect that guides devotees toward liberation. Regional worship traditions include daily rituals, special pujas on Kali Puja and Diwali, and the celebration of Ramakrishna's birthday. The temple attracts pilgrims from all over the world, and the deity is venerated as a universal mother who grants spiritual enlightenment. The mantra 'Om Krim Kalikayai Namah' is chanted for her blessings, and the Bhavatarini Stotram praises her as the savior from worldly bondage.
Dakshineswar Kali thus stands as a unique synthesis of Tantric, Bhakti, and modern spiritual movements, embodying the compassionate face of the goddess.
