§ 01Origins & Significance

Who is Ekambareshvara (Kanchipuram)

Ekambareshvara is the presiding deity of the Ekambareshvara Temple in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, and is one of the Pancha Bhoota Stalams, representing the element of earth (Prithvi). According to the Skanda Purana, this is the site where Parvati (Kamakshi) performed penance under an ancient mango tree, and Shiva manifested as a linga of earth to bless her. The Shiva Purana also extols this kshetra as a prime center of Shiva worship. The linga is said to be made of sand or earth, symbolizing the earth element, and is unique among the Pancha Bhoota lingas. The temple's iconography centers on this linga, which is enshrined in a sanctum that also houses a revered ancient mango tree, believed to be over 3,500 years old.

The tree is said to bear fruits of four different tastes, representing the four Vedas, as per local tradition. The temple complex features a thousand-pillar hall (Ayiram Kaal Mandapam), built by the Vijayanagara kings, which showcases exquisite granite pillars with intricate carvings. The temple's gopuram (tower) is one of the tallest in South India. Regional worship traditions include the annual Panguni Uttiram festival, which celebrates the marriage of Shiva and Kamakshi, and Maha Shivaratri, when special abhishekams are performed. In Hindu cosmology, Ekambareshvara represents the earth element, one of the five primordial elements (Pancha Bhoota) that constitute the material universe.

The temple is also associated with the story of Shiva as a hunter (Kirata) who tested Arjuna, as narrated in the Mahabharata Vana Parva. Devotees believe that worship here grants liberation from the cycle of birth and death, and the temple is considered a powerful site for performing ancestral rites. The consort of Ekambareshvara is the goddess Kamakshi, whose temple is nearby. The mount (vahana) is Nandi, the bull. The presiding mantra is 'Om Ekāmbarēśvarāya Namaḥ', and the Shiva Panchakshari is also chanted.

The temple is a major pilgrimage destination, especially for those seeking to honor the earth element.
