Who is Kateel Durga
Kateel Durga is the presiding deity of the Kateel Durga Temple, situated on an island in the Nandini River in Karnataka. This form of the goddess is unique for her association with a bee, as she is believed to have slain the demon Arunasura by assuming the form of a giant bee. The legend, as recorded in the Skanda Purana and local temple traditions, narrates that Arunasura, a powerful demon, had obtained a boon that he could only be killed by a female who was neither human nor animal, and who could take any form.
To circumvent this, the goddess Durga manifested as a bee—an insect—and stung the demon to death, thus protecting the region. This episode underscores the goddess's ability to overcome evil in unexpected forms, a theme resonant with the Devi Mahatmya, where the goddess assumes various fierce forms to vanquish demons. Iconographically, Kateel Durga is depicted seated on a lion, holding a trishula (trident) and a lotus, symbolizing power and purity.
The bee is often shown near her or as part of the narrative imagery. The temple itself is a significant pilgrimage site, especially during Navaratri and the annual Kateel Temple festival, when the goddess is worshipped with great fervor. Regional traditions in Karnataka revere Kateel Durga as a protective mother who safeguards devotees from harm.
In Hindu cosmology, this form exemplifies the principle that the divine can manifest in any form to restore cosmic order, as described in the Devi Mahatmya (Chapter 5, verses 23-25) where the goddess declares, 'I am the power that creates, sustains, and destroys.' The Kateel Durga legend thus reinforces the goddess's role as the ultimate protector who uses unconventional means to defeat adharma.
