§ 01Origins & Significance

Who is Trayambakeshwar

Trayambakeshwar is the presiding deity of the Trimbakeshwar Temple near Nashik, Maharashtra, and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the most sacred abodes of Shiva. The name 'Tryambaka' means 'three-eyed,' referring to Shiva's third eye, but the linga here uniquely has three faces representing the Trimurti—Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva—as described in the Shiva Purana (Kotirudra Samhita, chapter 14). This form symbolizes the unity of the three cosmic functions: creation, preservation, and destruction. The temple is also revered as the source of the Godavari River, which is said to have originated from a tank called Kushavarta, located within the temple complex.

According to the Skanda Purana (Nasik Kshetra Mahatmya), the sage Gautama performed severe penance to bring the Ganga to earth, and Shiva, pleased, caused the Godavari to flow from his matted locks at this spot. The linga is enshrined in a deep cavity, constantly bathed by a stream of water from the river's source. Iconographically, the three-faced linga is unique among Jyotirlingas, with each face adorned with a crown and ornaments, representing the Trimurti. The temple's architecture follows the Hemadpanthi style, and the sanctum is surrounded by other shrines dedicated to various deities.

Regional worship is especially prominent in Maharashtra, where the temple is a major pilgrimage site. The Kumbh Mela is held here every twelve years, as the Godavari is considered the Ganga of the south. In Hindu cosmology, Trayambakeshwar is associated with the element of water (Jala) among the five elements (Pancha Bhoota), and the linga is believed to be self-manifested (Swayambhu). The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, which is dedicated to Tryambaka, is chanted here for healing and liberation.

Festivals include Maha Shivaratri, when the linga is bathed in milk and honey, and the Kumbh Mela, which attracts millions of devotees. The deity is worshipped as the lord of the three worlds and the bestower of moksha.
