Who is Ucchishta Ganapati
Ucchishta Ganapati is a distinctive tantric form of Lord Ganesha, primarily described in the Mudgala Purāṇa and the Ucchiṣṭa Gaṇapati Tantra. The term 'ucchishta' refers to leftover food or remnants, symbolizing the transcendence of conventional purity and impurity. This form is associated with the vamachara or left-hand path, which utilizes impure substances as a means to attain spiritual liberation. According to the Mudgala Purāṇa, Ucchishta Ganapati is one of the eight forms of Ganesha that appear in the Kali Yuga for the welfare of devotees. Iconographically, he is depicted with a blue or dark complexion, six arms, and seated with his consort Shakti on his lap.
He holds a japa mala (rosary), pomegranate, blue lotus, elephant goad, noose, and lotus in his hands. The japa mala signifies mantra repetition, the pomegranate represents fertility and abundance, the blue lotus symbolizes wisdom, the goad and noose denote control over obstacles, and the lotus indicates purity. His consort Shakti is often shown holding a blue lotus and a vessel of nectar. The Ucchiṣṭa Gaṇapati Tantra elaborates on his worship, which includes offerings of leftover food, wine, and other impure substances, transforming them into sacred offerings. This practice underscores the non-dual philosophy that all aspects of existence, including the seemingly impure, are manifestations of the divine.
Regional worship of Ucchishta Ganapati is prevalent in tantric traditions across India, particularly in regions like Bengal, Assam, and Kerala. His festivals include a tantric observance of Vinayaka Chaturthi, where rituals deviate from orthodox norms. In Hindu cosmology, Ucchishta Ganapati represents the ultimate acceptance and integration of all dualities, embodying the principle that the divine pervades everything without distinction. His mount is the mouse, which symbolizes the ability to penetrate even the smallest obstacles. The mantra 'Om Ucchiṣṭagaṇapataye Namaḥ' is chanted for his blessings, believed to confer spiritual power and worldly success.
