Ardra Nakshatra Mantra

आर्द्रा नक्षत्र मन्त्र
Also known as: Rudra Nakshatra Mantra, Moist Star Healing, Shiva Ardra Mantra
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Ardra Nakshatra Mantra is a sacred chant dedicated to the sixth nakshatra of the zodiac, Ardra, which is ruled by the fierce and compassionate deity Rudra (Shiva). According to the Jyotisha texts, Ardra spans from 6°40' to 20°00' in the sign of Gemini (Mithuna) and is symbolized by a teardrop or a human head, representing the moisture of life and the transformative power of tears. The mantra is primarily associated with Rudra, the storm god, who embodies both destruction and healing.

In the Shiva Purana, Rudra is described as the one who cuts through karmic knots and purifies the soul, making this mantra especially potent for healing chronic diseases and deep-seated ailments. The beej-akshara (seed syllable) for Ardra is 'Dam' (डं), which is linked to the element of water and the cleansing of emotional and physical toxins. The Ardra Nakshatra Mantra is traditionally chanted to invoke Rudra's grace for transformation, purification, and relief from suffering.

It is recommended to chant this mantra 108 times during the Ardra nakshatra period (approximately 13 hours each month) or on Mondays, especially during the waning moon phase. The ideal ritual setting includes facing north or east, wearing white or red clothing, and offering water, bilva leaves, and incense to a Shiva linga or an image of Rudra. According to the Nakshatra literature, this mantra is also beneficial for those born under Ardra nakshatra (birth star) to mitigate the malefic effects of the nakshatra's ruler, Rahu, and to promote overall well-being.

Cautions: This mantra should not be chanted without proper guidance during eclipses or in impure states, as it invokes the intense energy of Rudra. It is advisable to perform a brief purification (achamana) before chanting and to avoid chanting after midnight unless under specific ritual instructions.
