Asana Mantra

आसन मन्त्र
Also known as: Yoga Postures, Seat, Stability
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Asana Mantra refers to the sacred utterances used in the practice of yoga postures (asanas), which constitute the third limb of Ashtanga Yoga as codified by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. The primary mantra associated with asana is 'Sthira Sukham Asanam' (Yoga Sutras 2.46), which defines asana as a steady and comfortable posture. This mantra is chanted to invoke stability and ease in the body, preparing it for prolonged meditation. In the Hatha Yoga Pradipika (1.17), asanas are described as the first auxiliary of Hatha Yoga, providing steadiness, health, and lightness of body.

The beej-akshara (seed syllable) 'Om' is often prefixed to asana mantras, as in 'Om Sthira Sukham Asanam', to align the practitioner with the universal vibration. Specific postures have their own mantras; for example, the Padmasana Mantra ('Om Padmasanaya Namah') is used to honor the lotus posture. According to the Gheranda Samhita (2.1), there are 84 asanas, each with a corresponding mantra that invokes the deity or energy of that posture. The traditional purpose of chanting asana mantras is to sanctify the physical practice, transforming it into a spiritual discipline.

Benefits include enhanced concentration, physical stability, and the removal of obstacles in meditation. Recommended chanting context: before assuming the posture, chant the mantra three times or 108 times using a japa mala. The ideal time is during morning or evening sadhana, in a clean, quiet space. Cautions: mantras should be chanted with correct pronunciation and intention; they are not mere mechanical recitations.

As the Yoga Sutras (2.47) state, asana is perfected by relaxation of effort and meditation on the infinite. Thus, the mantra supports the inner attitude of surrender and steadiness.
