Ayurveda Bhaishajya Kalpana Mantra

आयुर्वेद भैषज्य कल्पना मन्त्र
Also known as: Bhaishajya Kalpana, Pharmaceutical Methods, Medicine Preparation
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Ayurveda Bhaishajya Kalpana Mantra refers to the sacred utterances employed in the traditional pharmaceutical science of Ayurveda, known as Bhaishajya Kalpana. This discipline, detailed in classical texts such as the Charaka Samhita (particularly the Kalpa Sthana) and the Sushruta Samhita (Uttara Tantra), governs the preparation of herbal and mineral formulations. The mantras are chanted to invoke the blessings of Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods and the deity of Ayurveda, to ensure the potency, purity, and healing efficacy of medicines. According to the Charaka Samhita, the proper preparation of remedies is as crucial as the prescription itself, and mantras serve to align the pharmacist's intention with cosmic healing energies.

The beej-akshara (seed syllable) 'Bhaishajya' is often central, derived from the root 'bhaishaj' meaning 'to heal,' and is combined with 'Om' to form 'Om Bhaishajya,' a mantra that purifies the ingredients and imbues them with therapeutic power. Phonetically, the syllables resonate with the earth and water elements, believed to stabilize the formulation. Traditional purposes include enhancing the shelf life of medicines, preventing contamination, and amplifying the medicinal properties. The recommended chanting context is during the actual preparation process—while grinding, mixing, or decocting—preferably in a clean, sanctified space.

Practitioners often chant 108 times per step, as per the Mantra Mahodadhi, which prescribes specific counts for material transformation. The ideal time is during the Brahma Muhurta (pre-dawn) or on auspicious days like Ayurveda Day (Dhanvantari Jayanti). Cautions include maintaining strict hygiene and mental focus, as distractions are said to weaken the mantra's effect. Additionally, the mantra should not be chanted for harmful purposes, as per the ethical guidelines in the Shaktisangama Tantra.

These mantras are integral to the holistic approach of Ayurveda, where the spiritual and material aspects of healing are inseparable.
