Bhrigu Mantra

भृगु मन्त्र
Also known as: Bhrigu Muni, Author of Bhrigu Samhita, Sage of Astrology
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Bhrigu Mantra is a sacred invocation dedicated to Sage Bhrigu, one of the seven great sages (Saptarshis) born from the mind of Brahma. According to the Shrimad Bhagavatam (4.1.15), Bhrigu was created from Brahma's skin and became a renowned seer. He is traditionally credited as the author of the Bhrigu Samhita, a foundational astrological text that forms the basis of predictive astrology. The mantra is chanted to invoke the sage's blessings for astrological wisdom, foresight, and clarity in decision-making. The primary beej-akshara is 'Bhrīm' (भ्रीं), which combines the 'Bhr' sound (representing the sage's energy) with the 'īm' seed syllable (associated with illumination and wisdom).

The phoneme 'Bhr' is considered a bija for penetrating insight, as described in the Mantra Mahodadhi (Chapter 7, verse 23), which states that the 'Bhr' sound invokes the power of the Bhrigu lineage. The traditional purpose of this mantra is to enhance one's ability to perceive past, present, and future events, aligning with the sage's role as a master of time. It is also chanted for protection from negative planetary influences and for success in astrological consultations. The recommended chanting context includes early morning (Brahma Muhurta) or during the waning moon (Krishna Paksha) for deep introspection. A count of 108 repetitions per session is standard, using a rudraksha or crystal mala.

The ritual setting should include a clean space, a picture or yantra of Sage Bhrigu, and offerings of white flowers and incense. According to the Bhrigu Samhita itself, the mantra should be recited with unwavering focus and devotion. Cautions: This mantra should not be chanted without proper initiation (diksha) from a qualified guru, as it is considered a tantric mantra with potent energies. It is also advised to avoid chanting during eclipses or without purification. The Bhrigu Gayatri, a variant found in the Puranas, is often used for daily practice by astrologers.
