Brahma Sutra Dhyana Mantra

ब्रह्म सूत्र ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Brahma Sutras, Vedanta Sutras, Badarayana
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Brahma Sutra Dhyana Mantra is a contemplative verse used to invoke the essence of the Brahma Sutras, the foundational text of Vedanta philosophy attributed to the sage Badarayana. The Brahma Sutras, also known as the Vedanta Sutras, systematically synthesize the teachings of the Upanishads, establishing the nature of Brahman as the ultimate reality. According to the Brahma Sutras (1.1.1: athāto brahma jijñāsā), the inquiry into Brahman is the highest pursuit. The dhyana mantra is chanted to focus the mind on the aphorisms, facilitating deep meditation on the non-dual Brahman.

The mantra often begins with Om, the primordial sound, which represents Brahman itself, as stated in the Mandukya Upanishad (1.1: om ity etad akṣaram idaṃ sarvaṃ). The beej-akshara 'Om' is central, embodying the essence of all Vedantic teachings. The traditional purpose of this mantra is to attain liberation (moksha) through the realization of the identity of Atman and Brahman, as expounded in the Brahma Sutras (3.4.1: brahma veda brahmaiva bhavati). It is recommended to chant this mantra during the brahma muhurta (pre-dawn hours) in a quiet, sacred space, with a count of 108 repetitions using a rudraksha mala.

The chanting should be accompanied by contemplation on the sutras' meaning. According to the Mantra-Yoga-Samhita, such dhyana mantras purify the intellect and remove obstacles to self-realization. No specific cautions are noted, but the mantra should be chanted with reverence and understanding, as it is a tool for deep philosophical inquiry. The Brahma Sutra Dhyana Mantra is thus a gateway to the profound wisdom of Vedanta, guiding the practitioner toward the ultimate truth of non-duality.
