Chandra Bhedana Pranayama Mantra

चन्द्र भेदन प्राणायाम मन्त्र
Also known as: Moon Piercing, Left Nostril Breathing, Cooling Breath
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

Chandra Bhedana Pranayama, or Moon-Piercing Breath, is a classical yogic breathing technique detailed in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika (Chapter 2, verses 7–10) and the Gheranda Samhita (Chapter 5, verses 58–60). The practice involves inhaling exclusively through the left nostril, retaining the breath, and exhaling through the right nostril, thereby stimulating the ida nadi (lunar energy channel). The accompanying mantra, typically "Om Chandraya Namah" or the bija "Om" focused on the moon, is chanted mentally or softly during the breath retention phase to deepen the lunar resonance. According to the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Chandra Bhedana purifies the body, removes toxins, and balances the pranic flow by activating the cooling, feminine aspect of prana.

The Gheranda Samhita adds that this practice calms the mind, reduces pitta (heat) disorders, and promotes longevity. The mantra's bija "Om" represents the primordial sound, while "Chandraya Namah" invokes the deity Chandra, the lunar god who governs emotions, fluids, and the mind. In tantric traditions, the left nostril is associated with the ida nadi, which originates at the muladhara chakra and terminates at the left nostril, carrying lunar prana. Regular practice of Chandra Bhedana with mantra is recommended for those suffering from anxiety, hypertension, or excessive heat.

It is best performed in the morning or evening on an empty stomach, with a count of 12 to 36 rounds. Cautions include avoiding forceful breathing; those with low blood pressure or respiratory conditions should practice under guidance. The mantra may also be used in Chandra Puja to honor the moon deity. This technique is a foundational practice in hatha yoga and is revered for its balancing and cooling effects on the mind-body system.
