Chandra

चन्द्र
Also known as: Soma, Indu, Shashin, Nishakara, Kumar
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

Chandra, the lunar deity, is a prominent graha in Vedic astrology and Hindu mythology. His textual origin is traced to the Rigveda (10.85), where Soma is described as the divine nectar and the Moon is the receptacle of Soma. The Chandogya Upanishad (1.6.6) also glorifies the Moon as the gateway to the heavenly world. In mantra-shastra, Chandra is associated with the bija 'Sraam' (श्रां) and its variants, which are derived from the seed syllable 'S' (स) representing the tattva of water (ap) and the cooling, nourishing energy of the Moon. The mantra 'Om Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandraya Namah' is a classic navagraha mantra found in texts like the Mantra Mahodadhi (chapter on graha mantras).

The primary purpose of Chandra mantra is to pacify the mind, enhance emotional stability, and alleviate afflictions caused by a weak or malefic Moon in the horoscope. According to the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chanting Chandra mantra 11,000 times on a full moon day can strengthen the Moon's benefic effects. Traditional benefits include relief from mental stress, anxiety, insomnia, and water-related ailments. The mantra is also chanted for fertility, as the Moon governs the reproductive fluids and the tides, symbolizing the cyclical nature of life. Recommended chanting context: early morning or evening, facing north or east, on a white cloth, using a rosary of white sandalwood or crystal beads.

The ideal count is 108 repetitions daily, or 11,000 times over a period of 40 days during the waxing moon phase. Cautions: Chandra mantra should not be chanted during lunar eclipses without proper guidance, as the energy is considered disturbed. Also, those with excessive moon energy (Purnima birth) should chant with moderation to avoid over-emotionality. The Devi Mahatmya (chapter 11) also references the Moon as a deity who grants boons to devotees. In the Lalita Sahasranama, the goddess is described as 'Chandramandala-madhyaga' (dwelling in the lunar orb), indicating the Moon's association with divine feminine energy.

Thus, Chandra mantra serves both as a remedial measure for graha dosha and as a tool for spiritual purification, aligning the practitioner with the soothing, reflective qualities of the Moon.
