Guru

गुरु
Also known as: Brihaspati
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Gayatri mantra for Guru (Brihaspati) is a Vedic invocation dedicated to the planet Jupiter, the celestial preceptor of the gods. This mantra is derived from the tradition of Navagraha Gayatri mantras, which are expansions of the original Gayatri mantra (Rigveda 3.62.10) adapted for each graha. The mantra 'Om Devagurave Vidmahe Angirase Dhimahi Tanno Guru Prachodayat' invokes Guru as the teacher of the devas (gods) and as the descendant of the sage Angiras. The beej-akshara 'Gum' (गुं) is often associated with Guru in tantric texts such as the Mantra Mahodadhi, where it is used for meditation and japa.

Phonetically, the syllable 'Gu' represents darkness or ignorance, and 'Ru' signifies its remover, thus 'Guru' means the dispeller of darkness. The mantra is chanted for wisdom, knowledge retention, spiritual progress, and attracting fortune and abundance. According to the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, propitiating Guru through this mantra mitigates the malefic effects of a weak Jupiter in one's horoscope and enhances its benefic influences, such as intelligence, wealth, and progeny. The traditional purpose includes seeking blessings for education, career advancement, and marital harmony.

Recommended chanting context: ideally on Thursdays (Guruvar) at sunrise, facing east, after bathing and wearing yellow or white clothes. A japa mala of yellow sandalwood beads or crystals is used, with a count of 108 repetitions per session. The ritual setting may include a yellow lotus or a book as symbols of wisdom and learning. Cautions: this mantra should be chanted with proper pronunciation and devotion; it is not recommended for those with malefic Jupiter in their chart without guidance from a qualified astrologer, as it may amplify negative tendencies.

The Devi Mahatmya also references the power of Gayatri mantras for planetary pacification. Regular chanting is believed to align one with the cosmic energy of Jupiter, fostering generosity, optimism, and spiritual evolution.
