Hare Krishna Mahamantra Dhyana

हरे कृष्ण महामन्त्र ध्यान
Also known as: Hare Krishna Dhyana, Maha Mantra, Krishna Consciousness
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Hare Krishna Mahamantra Dhyana is a meditative practice centered on the sixteen-word mantra: 'Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare / Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.' This mantra is first mentioned in the Kali Santarana Upanishad (verse 2), where it is declared the supreme means of deliverance in the Kali Yuga. The Bhagavata Purana (11.5.32) affirms that chanting the names of Hari (Krishna) destroys all sins and bestows liberation. The mantra comprises three divine names: 'Hare' (the vocative of Hara, referring to Radha or the energy of the Lord), 'Krishna' (the all-attractive one), and 'Rama' (the source of pleasure, also identified with Balarama or the Supreme Lord).

Phonetically, the repetition of the guttural 'k' and labial 'r' sounds is said to stimulate the heart and throat chakras, facilitating devotion. According to the Chaitanya Charitamrita (Madhya 15.108), Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu propagated this mantra as the yuga-dharma, the prescribed practice for the age of Kali. The traditional purpose is to awaken pure love of God (prema-bhakti), purify the consciousness from material contamination, and attain liberation from the cycle of birth and death.

Chanting is recommended daily, ideally in the early morning (brahma-muhurta) or evening, with a japa mala of 108 beads, completing at least one round. Group chanting (kirtana) is especially powerful, as described in the Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu. No specific cautions are given; the mantra is considered universally beneficial and open to all, regardless of caste, creed, or gender.

The dhyana (meditation) aspect involves visualizing the divine forms of Radha and Krishna while chanting, as taught in the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition. This practice is central to the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) and is observed globally.
