Kaula Rahasya Mantra

कौल रहस्य मन्त्र
Also known as: Kaula Rahasya, Secret Teachings, Kaula Mysteries
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Kaula Rahasya Mantra belongs to the esoteric Kaula tradition, a sub-school of Tantra that emphasizes direct experience of the divine through the body and senses. The term 'Kaula' derives from 'Kula', meaning clan or lineage, and refers to the transmission of secret knowledge from guru to disciple. According to the 'Kaula Tantras', such mantras are not to be written or spoken openly but are imparted orally during initiation (diksha). The 'Mantra-Yoga-Samhita' notes that Kaula mantras often incorporate bija (seed) syllables like 'Hrim', 'Krim', or 'Aim', which correspond to the subtle energies of the chakras and the goddess Tripura Sundari.

The primary deity associated is the Kaula form of the Goddess, often identified with Lalita or Bhairavi, as described in the 'Shaktisangama Tantra'. The purpose of this mantra is the attainment of Kaula siddhis—supernatural powers such as control over the elements, clairvoyance, and the ability to transcend duality. It is also chanted for understanding the secret teachings of the Kaula path, which include the union of Shiva and Shakti within the practitioner's own body. Traditionally, the mantra is recited during night rituals, especially on new moon nights, with a minimum of 108 repetitions using a rudraksha mala.

The recommended setting is a secluded place, often a cremation ground or a forest, after receiving proper initiation. Cautions are emphasized: without initiation, the mantra may cause imbalance or attract negative energies. The 'Devi Mahatmya' warns that secret mantras should be practiced under the guidance of a qualified guru. The Kaula Rahasya Mantra is thus a powerful tool for spiritual transformation, reserved for the dedicated practitioner who has received the lineage's blessings.
