Khadyota Vidya Mantra

खद्योत विद्या मन्त्र
Also known as: Light Mantra, Inner Illumination, Tantric Light
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Khadyota Vidya Mantra is a secret Tantric mantra associated with the inner light of consciousness. The term 'khadyota' (खद्योत) means 'firefly' or 'glowworm,' symbolizing the faint, yet intrinsic, light of the self that guides one toward spiritual illumination. This mantra is primarily found in the Sri Vidya tradition, as referenced in texts such as the 'Vamakeshvara Tantra' and the 'Yogini Hridaya,' where it is considered a subsidiary vidya (knowledge) within the larger framework of the Lalita Sahasranama. The mantra's beej-akshara (seed syllable) is often 'Om' or 'Hreem,' representing the union of consciousness (Shiva) and energy (Shakti).

Phonetically, the repetition of 'Khadyota' invokes the vibration of light, purifying the mind and awakening inner wisdom. Traditionally, this mantra is chanted for self-realization and understanding the self as pure light, beyond the limitations of the physical body. It is recommended to be recited during the early morning or at twilight, in a quiet space, with a count of 108 repetitions using a crystal or rudraksha mala. The practitioner should focus on a point of light (bindu) visualized at the third eye or heart center.

According to the 'Mantra Mahodadhi,' this vidya is particularly effective for dispelling ignorance and enhancing intuitive knowledge. Caution is advised: this mantra is considered secret and should be received from a qualified guru in the Sri Vidya parampara. Improper practice without initiation may lead to spiritual imbalance. The Khadyota Vidya is not meant for material gains but solely for inner illumination and liberation (moksha).
