Krama Dhyana Mantra

क्रम ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Krama, Sequential, Kashmir Shaivism
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Krama Dhyana Mantra is a meditative formula central to the Krama system of Kashmir Shaivism, a non-dual tantric tradition that emphasizes the sequential unfolding of consciousness. The term 'Krama' means 'sequence' or 'order,' and this mantra is used to contemplate the progressive stages of spiritual evolution from the limited individual self to the supreme reality of Shiva-Shakti. The textual origins of the Krama system are found in scriptures such as the 'Tantraloka' of Abhinavagupta (c. 10th-11th century CE) and the 'Kali Krama' texts, which detail the worship of the goddess Kali as the dynamic aspect of consciousness.

The mantra is associated with the deity Shiva/Shakti, representing the union of pure consciousness and its creative power. In the Krama tradition, the mantra often incorporates the beej-akshara 'KRAIM' or 'HRIM,' which are seed syllables that evoke the energies of transformation and illumination. Phonetically, the 'K' sound denotes the first stage of manifestation, 'R' represents the dynamic flow, and 'AIM' or 'IM' indicates the unfolding of knowledge. The traditional purpose of this mantra is to guide the practitioner through the twelve or more stages (kramas) of cosmic and spiritual evolution, as described in the 'Mantra-Yoga-Samhita' and other Shaiva texts.

By chanting this dhyana mantra, one aims to realize the progressive manifestation of the self, from the gross to the subtle, culminating in the recognition of one's identity with the supreme consciousness. Recommended chanting context includes a quiet setting, preferably at dawn or dusk, with a count of 108 repetitions using a rudraksha mala. The ritual setting may involve visualization of the sequential stages, such as the emergence of the elements, senses, and deities. Cautions: This mantra is considered advanced and should be practiced under the guidance of a qualified guru, as improper understanding of the sequential stages can lead to confusion.

It is not recommended for beginners without proper initiation into the Krama system.
