Kriya Yoga Mantra

क्रिया योग मन्त्र
Also known as: Kriya Mantras, Action Yoga, Purification
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Kriya Yoga Mantra belongs to the tradition of Kriya Yoga, a system of spiritual practice emphasizing action (kriya) as a means of purification and self-realization. While the term 'Kriya Yoga' is famously systematized by Mahavatar Babaji and Paramahansa Yogananda in modern times, its roots are found in ancient yogic and tantric scriptures. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (2.1) define Kriya Yoga as 'tapah svadhyayeshvara-pranidhanani kriya-yogah'—austerity, self-study, and surrender to the Divine. This mantra tradition draws from that foundational text, as well as from Hatha Yoga texts like the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and tantric works such as the Shiva Samhita and the Gheranda Samhita, which prescribe various kriyas (cleansing actions) and accompanying mantras for purification.

The deity association is 'Various' because Kriya Yoga mantras may be directed to different forms of the Divine—often to Shiva, Shakti, or the inner Guru—depending on the specific kriya being performed. The beej-akshara (seed syllable) 'Kriya' itself is derived from the Sanskrit root 'kri' (to do), and the mantra 'Om Kriya Namah' is a common form, where 'Om' is the primordial sound and 'Namah' indicates salutation. Phonetically, the mantra resonates with the energy of action and transformation. Traditional purposes include purification of the body and mind, removal of karmic blockages, preparation for deeper meditation, and activation of the subtle energy channels (nadis).

The recommended chanting context varies: some kriyas are performed during specific times like sunrise or sunset, often in a seated posture with focused breath. The count may range from 108 repetitions (one mala) to longer japa sessions. Ritual settings include a clean, quiet space, sometimes with a small altar or image of a guru or deity. Cautions: Kriya Yoga mantras should ideally be received from a qualified guru, as improper practice can lead to energetic imbalances.

Beginners are advised to start with simple purification kriyas under guidance. The mantras are considered powerful tools for accelerating spiritual progress, but they require discipline and sincerity.
