Kubera Mantra (Protection)

कुबेर मन्त्र
Also known as: Dhanapati Mantra, Guardian of North, Lord of Wealth
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Kubera Mantra is a sacred invocation dedicated to Kubera, the lord of wealth and the guardian of the northern direction (Dikpala). According to the Puranas, particularly the Vishnu Purana and the Matsya Purana, Kubera is the son of sage Vishrava and the half-brother of Ravana, ruling over the Yaksha kingdom of Alaka. He is revered as the treasurer of the gods (Devagana) and the custodian of all earthly treasures. The mantra is chanted primarily for protection of wealth, financial security, and prosperity, as well as for safeguarding against poverty and financial loss. The primary beej-akshara associated with Kubera is 'Om' followed by 'Kuberaya Namah', which invokes his blessings.

In Tantric traditions, as described in the Mantra Mahodadhi, the mantra 'Om Yaksharajaya Namah' is also used to connect with his aspect as the king of the Yakshas. The Kubera Gayatri, found in some later texts, is a more elaborate form: 'Om Yaksharajaya Vidmahe, Vaishravanaya Dhimahi, Tanno Kubera Prachodayat'. This mantra is traditionally chanted on Dhanteras, the first day of Diwali, and during Kubera Puja for wealth accumulation. The recommended chanting count is 108 times daily, preferably in the morning after bathing, facing north. Ritual offerings include white flowers, sandalwood paste, and a lamp with ghee.

Cautions: The mantra should be chanted with pure intentions; misuse for greed or harm is discouraged. It is also advised to perform a brief purification (achamana) before chanting. The iconography of Kubera—seated on a lotus, holding a citron (matulinga) and a mongoose spewing gold—symbolizes his role as the bestower of abundance and protector of treasures. The Pushpaka Vimana, his celestial chariot, is mentioned in the Ramayana as a symbol of divine opulence. Thus, the Kubera Mantra serves both as a protective shield for material wealth and a spiritual tool for aligning with the divine energy of prosperity.
