Kundalini Maha Mantra

कुण्डलिनी महा मन्त्र
Also known as: Kundalini, Serpent Power, Great Kundalini
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Kundalini Maha Mantra is a potent Tantric invocation aimed at awakening the dormant serpent power (Kundalini Shakti) residing at the base of the spine. Its textual origins are found in various Tantric and Yogic scriptures, most notably the *Kundalini Tantra* and the *Shiva Samhita*, which describe the coiled energy as the primal creative force. The mantra is composed of specific seed syllables (bījākṣaras) that resonate with the subtle energy channels (nāḍīs) and chakras. According to the *Mantra Mahodadhi*, the phonemes in the mantra correspond to the elements of the chakras, facilitating the ascent of Kundalini through the six lower centers to the crown (sahasrāra).

The deity invoked is Kundalini Shakti, the feminine aspect of consciousness, whose union with Shiva (pure awareness) is the ultimate goal. Traditional purposes include purification of the nāḍīs, activation of the chakras, and attainment of higher states of consciousness. The *Yoga Sutras of Patanjali* (indirectly) and the *Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā* mention practices that prepare the practitioner for such awakening. Recommended chanting context includes early morning (Brahma muhūrta) or during specific lunar phases (e.g., full moon), with a count of 108 repetitions per session, ideally after establishing a steady āsana and prāṇāyāma.

Ritual setting involves a clean, quiet space, often with a yantra or image of the serpent coiled around a lingam. Cautions are paramount: this mantra should only be chanted under the guidance of a qualified guru, as premature or improper practice can lead to physical, mental, or energetic imbalances. The *Kulārṇava Tantra* warns that without proper purification and preparation, awakening Kundalini can be dangerous. Thus, the mantra is reserved for advanced sādhakas who have undergone necessary initiations and have a stable foundation in yogic discipline.
