Kundalini Maha Mudra Mantra

कुण्डलिनी महा मुद्रा मन्त्र
Also known as: Maha Mudra, Great Seal, Kundalini Gesture
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Kundalini Maha Mudra Mantra is a sacred formula associated with the great gesture (maha mudra) that awakens the dormant serpent power (kundalini) at the base of the spine. This mantra is rooted in the traditions of Hatha Yoga and Tantra, as described in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika (3.10-18) and the Gheranda Samhita (3.6-10), where maha mudra is detailed as a key practice for directing prana into the sushumna nadi. The mantra itself often incorporates the seed syllable 'Om' (प्रणव) and may include bija sounds such as 'Hrim' (ह्रीं) or 'Krim' (क्रीं), which are associated with the goddess Kundalini and the fire element, respectively.

According to the Mantra Mahodadhi (Chapter 7), the maha mudra mantra is chanted to seal the energy locks (bandhas) — namely mula bandha, uddiyana bandha, and jalandhara bandha — thereby preventing the dissipation of prana and forcing it upward through the chakras. The primary deity of this mantra is Shiva-Shakti in their union, representing the static and dynamic aspects of consciousness. The purpose of chanting this mantra is to facilitate the ascent of kundalini from the muladhara chakra to the sahasrara, leading to spiritual liberation (kaivalya).

Traditionally, the mantra is recited during meditation while performing the physical maha mudra posture: pressing the perineum with the left heel, extending the right leg, and holding the breath. The recommended count is 108 repetitions per session, ideally at dawn or midnight, in a secluded space. Cautions are emphasized in the Shiva Samhita (5.40-45): the mantra and mudra should only be practiced under the guidance of a qualified guru, as premature or improper awakening of kundalini can cause physical or mental imbalances.

The mantra is also used in tantric rituals for purifying the nadis and balancing the ida and pingala energies before deeper sadhana.
