Kundalini Sri Chakra Dhyana Mantra

कुण्डलिनी श्री चक्र ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Kundalini Sri Chakra, Serpent Power and Yantra, Sri Vidya Kundalini
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Kundalini Sri Chakra Dhyana Mantra is a meditative invocation central to the Sri Vidya tradition, used for the awakening of Kundalini Shakti and her ascent through the nine enclosures (navavarana) of the Sri Chakra. The mantra's textual origins lie in tantric works such as the *Vamakeshvara Tantra* and the *Yogini Hridaya*, which describe the Sri Chakra as the abode of the goddess Lalita Tripurasundari, who is identical with Kundalini. The mantra itself is a dhyana (visualization) formula, often incorporating the beej-akshara 'Hreem' (ह्रीं), the primary seed syllable of the Sri Vidya, which represents the union of Shiva and Shakti. Phonetically, 'Hreem' combines the fire (Ha), the sun (Ra), the moon (Ee), and the creative power (M), symbolizing the cosmic and microcosmic energies.

The purpose of this mantra is to facilitate the contemplative union of the individual consciousness with the supreme goddess, leading to liberation (moksha). According to the *Devi Mahatmya* (Chapter 11), the goddess is the power that sustains the universe, and her contemplation through the Sri Chakra dissolves the mind's limitations. Traditional practice involves chanting the mantra during specific lunar phases, such as the full moon or new moon, and in a purified ritual space. The recommended count is 108 repetitions per session, often accompanied by nyasa (placement of mantras on the body) and mudras.

The practitioner visualizes Kundalini as a coiled serpent at the muladhara chakra, rising through the six chakras and piercing the bindu at the center of the Sri Chakra. Cautions are emphasized in texts like the *Shaktisangama Tantra*: this mantra should only be chanted after proper initiation (diksha) from a qualified guru, as premature practice without purification can cause energetic imbalances. The mantra is especially revered in South India among Sri Vidya practitioners, and its chanting is integral to the Sri Chakra puja during Navaratri. The nine enclosures correspond to the nine stages of spiritual evolution, and the mantra guides the sadhaka through each level, culminating in the realization of non-duality.
