Kushtha Nivarana Mantra

कुष्ठ निवारण मन्त्र
Also known as: Leprosy Healing, Skin Disease Mantra, Kushtha Nashaka
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Kushtha Nivarana Mantra is a Vedic healing incantation primarily found in the Atharvaveda (e.g., AV 1.23, 1.24, 2.3, 6.25, 9.8), where hymns are dedicated to curing kushtha (a term encompassing leprosy and various chronic skin diseases). The mantra invokes the Ashwini Kumaras, the divine twin physicians of the Vedic pantheon, along with Surya (the Sun god) and Dhanvantari (the physician of the gods), to bestow healing energy. The beej-akshara (seed syllable) often associated is 'Hraum' or 'Om', with the phoneme 'Ksh' representing the disease's destruction. According to the Ayurvedic text Charaka Samhita (Chikitsa Sthana 7), kushtha is caused by imbalances of the three doshas (vata, pitta, kapha) and toxins in the blood and skin.

The mantra is chanted to purify the subtle and gross bodies, aligning with the healing herbs and solar energy. Traditional purpose includes relief from leprosy, eczema, psoriasis, and other dermatological ailments. The recommended chanting context is at sunrise or sunset, facing east, after bathing, with a count of 108 repetitions using a rudraksha or crystal mala. Ritual setting may involve offering water to Surya and applying sandalwood paste.

Cautions: This mantra is a supplement to, not a replacement for, medical treatment; it should be used alongside Ayurvedic or allopathic therapy. The Atharvaveda (AV 2.3.1-6) explicitly states that the mantra works in conjunction with herbal remedies. No adverse effects are known, but purity of body and mind is advised. The mantra is also found in later tantric compilations like the Mantra Mahodadhi (Chapter 21), which elaborates on its nyasa and visualization practices.
