Lakshmana Gupt Dhyana Mantra

लक्ष्मण गुप्त ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Lakshmana Gupt, Guru, Kashmir Shaiva Sage
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Lakshmana Gupt Dhyana Mantra is a meditative invocation dedicated to the revered guru Lakshmana Gupt, who is celebrated as the principal teacher of the great Kashmir Shaiva philosopher Abhinavagupta. According to the Tantraloka (1.6–7), Abhinavagupta received direct initiation from Lakshmana Gupt, who was himself a master of the Trika system. This mantra is not a Vedic mantra but belongs to the tantric tradition of guru dhyana, focusing on the visualization and internalization of the guru's form and grace. The mantra typically includes the beej-akshara 'Om' and the name 'Lakshmana Guptaya Namah', where 'Namah' signifies salutation and surrender.

The phoneme 'Om' represents the primordial sound and the ultimate reality, while 'Guptaya' indicates the hidden or secret nature of the guru's wisdom. The primary purpose of this dhyana mantra is to invoke the blessings of the guru lineage, to facilitate the transmission of esoteric knowledge, and to attain the grace of the masters. As stated in the Abhinavagupta's works, particularly the Tantrasara, meditating on the guru dissolves the ego and opens the disciple to direct spiritual insight. Traditionally, this mantra is chanted during Guru Purnima or on any auspicious day, preferably in the morning after bathing, facing east or north.

The recommended count is 108 repetitions using a rudraksha mala. The ritual setting should include a clean space, an image or yantra of the guru, and offerings of flowers and incense. Cautions: This mantra should be chanted with devotion and proper understanding of the guru-disciple relationship; it is not recommended for those without a qualified guru or for mere curiosity. The mantra is considered powerful for removing obstacles in spiritual practice and for bestowing wisdom, as per the lineage teachings preserved in the Kashmir Shaiva tradition.
