Mahavedha Dhyana Mantra

महावेध ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Mahavedha, Great Piercing, Energy Piercing
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Mahavedha Dhyana Mantra is a meditative invocation associated with the advanced yogic technique of Mahavedha, the 'great piercing,' which is detailed in classical hatha yoga texts such as the Hatha Yoga Pradipika (3.24-27) and the Gheranda Samhita (3.24-27). This mantra is chanted to facilitate the piercing of the three granthis (knots) — Brahma, Vishnu, and Rudra — and to enable the ascent of kundalini shakti through the sushumna nadi. The term 'vedha' means piercing or penetration, and 'maha' denotes greatness, indicating a profound energetic breakthrough.

The mantra is typically composed of seed syllables (bija) that resonate with the subtle energy channels; common bijas include 'Hrim' and 'Kshraum,' which are associated with the piercing of energy blockages. According to the Mantra Mahodadhi, such dhyana mantras are used during meditation to visualize the flow of prana and the awakening of the serpent power. The traditional purpose of this mantra is to remove obstacles in the nadis, balance the ida and pingala, and unite the individual consciousness with the supreme consciousness.

It is recommended to chant this mantra during early morning or evening, in a seated posture with a straight spine, and after mastering Mahabandha (the great lock). The count is often 108 repetitions using a rudraksha mala, accompanied by breath retention (kumbhaka) and visualization of light ascending the spine. Cautions include the need for guidance from a qualified guru, as premature or improper practice can cause energetic imbalances.

The mantra is also linked to the worship of Shiva and Shakti as the dual aspects of consciousness and energy, as described in the Shaktisangama Tantra. The Mahavedha Dhyana Mantra is thus a powerful tool for advanced sadhakas seeking to accelerate the kundalini awakening process and achieve higher states of meditation.
