Mantra Mahodadhi Dhyana Mantra

मन्त्र महोदधि ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Mantra Mahodadhi, Ocean of Mantras, Mahidhara
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Mantra Mahodadhi Dhyana Mantra refers to the meditative verses found within the *Mantra Mahodadhi*, a seminal 16th-century compendium of mantra-shastra composed by the scholar Mahidhara. This text, structured in 24 tarangas (waves), systematically presents the theory and practice of mantra sastra, including bija mantras, yantras, nyasa, and dhyana. The dhyana mantras within it are used for invoking the presiding deities of various mantras and for attaining mental focus during sadhana. According to the *Mantra Mahodadhi* itself (e.g., Taranga 1), the ocean of mantras is considered the source of all spiritual power, and meditating on this ocean as a whole is said to grant mastery over mantra shastra.

The dhyana mantra typically involves visualizing the vast expanse of mantras as a luminous ocean, with Mahidhara as the sage who churned this ocean. The beej-akshara 'Om' is often central, representing the primordial sound from which all mantras arise. Phonetically, the mantra may include syllables like 'Hrim', 'Shrim', and 'Klim', which are associated with the Mahavidyas. The traditional purpose of chanting this dhyana mantra is to purify the mind, deepen one's understanding of mantra science, and ultimately achieve mantra siddhi (perfection).

It is recommended to be chanted during the brahma muhurta (early morning) or during specific nakshatras like Pushya or Ashlesha. The count is typically 108 repetitions using a rudraksha or sphatika mala. Ritual setting includes a clean, east-facing seat, with offerings of flowers and incense. Cautions: This mantra should be chanted with proper pronunciation and intention, as per the *Mantra Mahodadhi*'s emphasis on adhikara (qualification).

It is not recommended for those without a basic understanding of mantra shastra, as it is a gateway to deeper tantric practices. The *Devi Mahatmya* also underscores the importance of dhyana in mantra sadhana, aligning with the purpose of this dhyana mantra.
