Mantra Purashcharana Dhyana Mantra

मन्त्र पुरश्चरण ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Purashcharana, Mantra Completion, Ritual Practice
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Mantra Purashcharana Dhyana Mantra is a contemplative verse used during the purashcharana ritual, a systematic practice for attaining mantra siddhi (perfection of a mantra). According to the Mantra Mahodadhi (a key text on mantra-shastra), purashcharana comprises five angas (limbs): japa (recitation), homa (fire offering), tarpana (libation), abhisheka (consecration), and brahmana-bhojana (feeding of priests). The dhyana mantra is chanted to visualize and internalize the entire process, ensuring the sadhaka's mind is aligned with the ritual's purpose. The term 'purashcharana' literally means 'performed before' or 'preliminary practice,' indicating its role in purifying the practitioner and the mantra before higher siddhis are sought.

The Devi Mahatmya (Chapter 13) emphasizes that such preparatory practices are essential for the successful invocation of deities. The beej-akshara (seed syllable) 'Om' often precedes the dhyana mantra, representing the primordial sound that activates the ritual. Phonetically, the mantra's syllables are designed to resonate with the chakras, harmonizing the practitioner's energy. Traditional purposes include removal of obstacles, fulfillment of desires, and spiritual advancement.

The recommended chanting context is during the purashcharana period, typically 100,000 repetitions of the main mantra, with the dhyana mantra recited at the beginning and end of each session. The ideal time is brahma muhurta (pre-dawn) or during specific nakshatras (lunar mansions) as prescribed in the Tantras. Cautions include strict adherence to ritual purity, avoidance of distractions, and performance under the guidance of a qualified guru, as improper practice may lead to adverse effects. The Mantra-Yoga-Samhita warns that purashcharana without proper dhyana yields incomplete results.

This dhyana mantra thus serves as a meditative anchor, integrating the five angas into a cohesive sadhana for mantra completion.
