Matangi Yantra Mantra

मातङ्गी यन्त्र मन्त्र
Also known as: Matangi Yantra, Ucchishta Yantra, Raja Matangi Geometry
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Matangi Yantra Mantra is a sacred sound formula used to activate the geometric diagram (yantra) of the goddess Matangi, the ninth of the Dasha Mahavidyas. According to the 'Matangi Tantra', this yantra embodies the goddess's essence as the bestower of inner wisdom, speech mastery, and creative inspiration. The primary mantra associated with this yantra is 'Om Hreem Kleem Hoom Matangyai Namah', which combines the beejaksharas (seed syllables) Hreem (transformation), Kleem (attraction), and Hoom (protection), followed by the goddess's name and salutation. The 'Shaktisangama Tantra' describes Matangi as the goddess of the spoken word and the arts, and her yantra is traditionally employed by practitioners seeking eloquence, musical talent, and social influence.

The yantra itself is a complex geometric pattern, often drawn on metal or paper, with concentric circles, lotus petals, and triangles representing the goddess's creative and protective energies. Chanting the mantra while meditating on the yantra is believed to purify the mind, enhance communication skills, and attract favorable circumstances. The recommended practice involves reciting the mantra 108 times daily, preferably during the morning or evening, facing east or north. Some traditions prescribe chanting on specific days like Fridays or during the waxing moon phase for maximum benefit.

The 'Mantra Mahodadhi' notes that Matangi is also known as Ucchishta Matangi, associated with leftover offerings, and her worship requires careful adherence to ritual purity and secrecy. Cautions include avoiding consumption of non-vegetarian food and intoxicants during the sadhana period, and the mantra should not be chanted without proper initiation from a qualified guru. The yantra is often placed in a clean, secluded space, and offerings of jasmine flowers, sandalwood paste, and sweet fruits are made. This practice is particularly prevalent in South India and Bengal among tantric practitioners, and it is also observed during Matangi Jayanti and special tantric rituals.

The 'Lalita Sahasranama' indirectly references Matangi's attributes, linking her to the goddess Lalita's creative speech. Overall, the Matangi Yantra Mantra is a potent tool for those seeking to harness the goddess's energy for intellectual and artistic pursuits.
