Muhurta Mantra

मुहूर्त मन्त्र
Also known as: Auspicious Time, Muhurta Shastra, Timing Rituals
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

Mantras for selecting and honoring auspicious moments (muhurta) are integral to Vedic and Puranic traditions, ensuring that human actions align with cosmic rhythms. The concept of muhurta is rooted in Jyotisha (Vedic astrology), as detailed in texts like the Brihat Samhita of Varahamihira and the Muhurta Chintamani. These mantras are typically addressed to Kala (Time) personified, or to Surya (the Sun), who governs the celestial cycles.

The beej-akshara 'Glaum' (ग्लौं) is often associated with muhurta rituals, invoking the energy of Ganesha to remove obstacles at the chosen time. According to the Devi Mahatmya, the goddess Durga is also propitiated for auspicious timing, as she embodies the power of time (Kali). The purpose of chanting a muhurta mantra is to sanctify the moment, attract divine blessings, and ensure the success of endeavors such as weddings, housewarming (griha pravesh), and new business ventures.

Traditional practice recommends chanting the mantra 108 times at the exact commencement of the muhurta, facing east or north, with offerings of flowers and incense. The Mantra Mahodadhi prescribes specific muhurta mantras for different activities, emphasizing the importance of planetary positions. Cautions include avoiding inauspicious periods like Rahu Kala or eclipses, as per Jyotisha shastra.

The mantra is believed to harmonize the individual's karma with the cosmic order, leading to prosperity and protection. The Rigveda (10.85) also alludes to the sanctity of time in marriage rituals, underscoring the Vedic foundation of muhurta worship.
