Mula Bandha Dhyana Mantra (Detailed)

मूल बन्ध ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Mula Bandha, Root Lock, Perineum Lock
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

Mula Bandha Dhyana Mantra is a meditative invocation used to facilitate the practice of Mula Bandha, the root lock described in classical hatha yoga texts. The term 'Mula Bandha' appears in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika (3.61-67), where it is explained as the contraction of the perineum that forces prana (vital energy) upward through the sushumna nadi. The Gheranda Samhita (3.14-15) similarly describes it as a key technique for awakening kundalini. The mantra itself is a dhyana (meditation) formula, often comprising bija syllables such as 'Om' and 'Hrim', which resonate with the muladhara chakra. According to the Shat-chakra-nirupana (a tantric text on chakras), the muladhara chakra is the seat of the dormant kundalini shakti, and Mula Bandha is the primary means to rouse her.

The beej-akshara 'Lam' is associated with the muladhara, and the mantra may incorporate this sound to stabilize the mind at the root center. Traditional purposes include the awakening of kundalini, control of sexual energy, and mastery of the root energy center. Regular chanting of the Mula Bandha Dhyana Mantra is said to seal the perineum, preventing the downward dissipation of prana and directing it upward for spiritual ascent. Recommended chanting context includes early morning or during sadhana, with a count of 108 repetitions using a rudraksha mala. The practitioner should be seated in a stable asana (e.g., siddhasana) and perform the physical lock simultaneously.

Cautions: Mula Bandha should be practiced under the guidance of a qualified guru, as improper technique can lead to energy imbalances or physical strain. Those with high blood pressure or heart conditions should avoid forceful retention. The mantra is chanted mentally or softly, aligning with the breath. The Devi Mahatmya (11.32-35) also alludes to the power of bandhas in controlling the goddess's energy, though Mula Bandha is primarily a yogic practice. In tantric traditions, the mantra is considered a form of worship of Kundalini Shakti, the divine feminine energy coiled at the base of the spine.
