Mula Bandha Mantra

मूल बन्ध मन्त्र
Also known as: Mula Bandha, Root Lock, Perineum Lock
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Mula Bandha Mantra is a sacred sound formula associated with the practice of Mula Bandha, the 'root lock,' a key technique in hatha yoga and tantric traditions for controlling prana (life force) and awakening Kundalini Shakti. The term 'Mula' means 'root' or 'source,' and 'Bandha' means 'lock' or 'seal.' This mantra is chanted to invoke and direct the energy of the root chakra (Muladhara), located at the perineum, to facilitate the upward movement of Kundalini through the sushumna nadi. The primary textual authority for Mula Bandha is the Hatha Yoga Pradipika (3.60-67), which describes the practice of contracting the perineum to awaken the dormant serpent power. The Gheranda Samhita (3.14-15) also elaborates on Mula Bandha as a means to control the apana vayu (downward-moving air) and unite it with prana, leading to spiritual liberation.

In tantric traditions, the mantra often incorporates the bija (seed) syllable 'LAM,' which is the bija of the Muladhara chakra, as per the Shat-Chakra-Nirupana (verse 5). The phoneme 'LAM' is associated with the earth element and the deity Ganesha, who governs the root chakra. The traditional purpose of this mantra is to seal the lower orifices, prevent the leakage of prana, and redirect sexual energy upward for higher spiritual practices. It is recommended to chant the Mula Bandha Mantra during meditation or asana practice, particularly in a seated posture with the spine erect.

The ideal time is early morning (Brahma Muhurta) or during the practice of pranayama. The count is typically 108 repetitions (one mala) using a rudraksha or crystal mala. Caution: This mantra should be practiced under the guidance of a qualified guru, as improper performance of Mula Bandha can lead to energy imbalances or physical discomfort. It is not recommended for those with high blood pressure, heart conditions, or during pregnancy without expert supervision.

The mantra is chanted to achieve mastery over the root energy center, leading to kundalini awakening, enhanced vitality, and spiritual progress.
