Narayanastra Dhyana Mantra

नारायणास्त्र ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Narayanastra, Vishnu's Weapon, Divine Astra
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Narayanastra Dhyana Mantra is a meditative invocation of the divine weapon of Lord Vishnu, known as the Narayanastra. This astra is described in the Mahabharata (e.g., Virata Parva and Drona Parva) as a celestial missile that, when released, produces a shower of countless arrows and projectiles, each imbued with the power of Narayana. The mantra is used for mental focus on the weapon's form and energy, not for actual deployment, as the astra is traditionally considered too powerful for casual use. The deity associated is Vishnu in his aspect as Narayana, the supreme being who wields this weapon.

The beej-akshara (seed syllable) often included in related mantras is 'Om' or 'Klim', though the dhyana mantra itself is a descriptive verse. According to the Puranas, such as the Vishnu Purana, the Narayanastra is invincible and can only be neutralized by complete surrender to Vishnu. The traditional purpose of chanting this dhyana mantra is to invoke the protective grace of Narayana, to ward off enemies and negative forces, and to cultivate a mindset of divine protection. It is also chanted for understanding the nature of this astra, as described in the Mahabharata, where it was used by warriors like Arjuna and Ashwatthama.

Recommended chanting context includes early morning or during protective rituals (shanti karmas), with a count of 108 repetitions using a rosary (japa mala). The setting should be a clean, quiet space, preferably with an image or yantra of Vishnu. Cautions: This mantra should not be chanted with aggressive intent, as the Narayanastra is a weapon of dharma and is meant for protection, not harm. It is advised to seek guidance from a qualified guru before regular practice, as the energy of the astra is intense.

The mantra is primarily meditative, focusing on the visualisation of Vishnu holding the astra, surrounded by divine light.
