Pancha Tattva Dhyana Mantra

पञ्च तत्त्व ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Five Elements, Mahabhuta, Elemental Meditation
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Pancha Tattva Dhyana Mantra is a set of five seed syllables (bīja mantras) used for meditation on the five great elements (pañca mahābhūta): earth (pṛthvī), water (āpas), fire (agni), air (vāyu), and ether (ākāśa). Each element is associated with a specific bīja: 'Laṃ' for earth, 'Vaṃ' for water, 'Raṃ' for fire, 'Yaṃ' for air, and 'Haṃ' for ether. These bījas are derived from the mātṛkā varṇamālā (matrix of phonemes) as described in tantric texts such as the *Mantra Mahodadhi* (chapter on bīja nirūpaṇa), where each syllable corresponds to a subtle energy center (cakra) and elemental force.

The *Śāradā Tilaka Tantra* (1.7-9) explains that these bījas are the condensed forms of the devatās governing the elements, known as the Pañca Bhūta Devīs—earth goddess Pṛthvī, water goddess Āpas, fire goddess Agni, air goddess Vāyu, and ether goddess Ākāśa. The practice aims to purify and balance the elemental composition of the body, leading to physical health, mental stability, and spiritual evolution. According to the *Yoga Sūtra* of Patañjali (3.44-45), mastery over the elements (bhūta jaya) is achieved through saṃyama (concentration, meditation, and samādhi) on their subtle forms, and this mantra meditation is a direct means to that end.

Traditionally, the mantras are chanted in sequence, starting with 'Laṃ' at the mūlādhāra cakra (root) and ascending to 'Haṃ' at the ājñā cakra (third eye), as outlined in the *Ṣaṭcakra Nirūpaṇa* (verses 1-5). The recommended practice is 108 repetitions per bīja, preferably at dawn or dusk in a seated posture, with visualization of the corresponding colors (yellow, white, red, smoky, and transparent) and geometric shapes (square, crescent, triangle, hexagon, and circle). Caution is advised: these mantras should be received from a qualified guru, as improper meditation can lead to elemental imbalances.

The *Kularṇava Tantra* (1.110) warns that without proper initiation, the bījas may agitate the prāṇic energies. This meditation is integral to Haṭha Yoga, Tantra, and Āyurveda, where elemental harmony is considered the foundation of health and liberation.
