Panchamukhi Hanuman Kavacha Dhyana Mantra

पञ्चमुखी हनुमान कवच ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Panchamukhi Hanuman, Five Faces, Supreme Protector
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Panchamukhi Hanuman Kavacha Dhyana Mantra is a meditative verse used to visualize the five-faced form of Hanuman, known as Panchamukhi Hanuman, for comprehensive protection. This mantra is detailed in the Hanuman Kavacha, a text within the Tantric tradition, and is also referenced in the Mantra Mahodadhi (a 16th-century compendium of mantras). The five faces represent distinct aspects of divine power: Hanuman (east, courage and devotion), Narasimha (south, fierce protection), Garuda (west, swiftness and healing), Varaha (north, lifting from difficulties), and Hayagriva (upward, wisdom and knowledge). Each face corresponds to a specific direction and element, creating a complete armor against all negative forces.

The dhyana (contemplation) involves mentally reciting the mantra while focusing on each face's attributes, thereby invoking their blessings. According to the Hanuman Kavacha, this mantra is chanted for removing obstacles, neutralizing enemies, curing diseases, and gaining strength and fearlessness. The recommended practice includes chanting 108 times daily, preferably in the morning after bathing, facing east. It is especially potent on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and during Hanuman Jayanti.

The mantra is considered a kavacha (armor) that shields the practitioner from physical and spiritual harm. Cautions: This mantra should be chanted with proper pronunciation and devotion; it is advised to receive initiation (upadesha) from a qualified guru, as the Tantric tradition emphasizes the importance of lineage. The Mantra Mahodadhi states that the beejas (seed syllables) within the mantra, such as 'Hraum' and 'Grum', activate the corresponding deities. The phonetics of these syllables are designed to resonate with specific chakras, aligning the practitioner's energy with the protective forces.

The Panchamukhi Hanuman form is also described in the Shaktisangama Tantra, where it is associated with the destruction of evil and the fulfillment of desires. This dhyana mantra is thus a powerful tool for spiritual seekers and those seeking comprehensive protection.
