Pashupatastra Mantra

पाशुपतास्त्र मन्त्र
Also known as: Shiva's Weapon, Rudra's Weapon, Pashupati Astra
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Pashupatastra Mantra is a potent invocation of Lord Shiva's supreme weapon, the Pashupatastra, which is described in the Mahabharata (e.g., Drona Parva 7.201) as the most destructive astra, capable of annihilating all beings. The mantra is addressed to Shiva in his aspect as Pashupati, 'Lord of Beasts,' symbolizing his dominion over all souls (pashu) bound by ignorance. According to the Shiva Purana (Rudra Samhita, Srishti Khanda 15), this weapon was bestowed upon Arjuna by Shiva after severe penance, and its mantra is chanted to invoke its power for both external protection and inner transformation.

The beej-akshara 'Om' precedes the mantra, aligning it with the primordial vibration, while the core syllables invoke Rudra's fierce energy. Phonetically, the mantra contains guttural and dental sounds that stimulate the root and throat chakras, awakening kundalini and dissolving ego. Traditionally, the mantra is used for ultimate destruction of enemies, both physical and spiritual, and for the grace of Shiva to transcend worldly bonds.

It is recommended to chant this mantra 108 times during the night of Maha Shivaratri, or during the Rudra-abhishekam ritual, with full concentration and devotion. Cautions are advised: the mantra should not be chanted without proper initiation (diksha) from a qualified guru, as its power can be overwhelming. It is also considered unsuitable for those seeking material gains alone, as its primary purpose is spiritual transformation and liberation.

The Pashupatastra Mantra thus embodies the dual nature of Shiva as both destroyer and liberator, guiding the sadhaka toward the ultimate truth beyond all forms.
